MILWAUKEE, WI – Hip-hop has a wide array of anthems to some of the nation’s most notorious cities – Compton, Brooklyn, Miami … but never before has an artist attempted to put Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the map.
Those days are over, thanks to Darick DDS Spears and his new album, “Milwaukee.” The artist was born and raised in Milwaukee and has a deep affinity for the characteristics of the city that make it unique. As he has developed his career over the past 10 years, he’s always had it in mind to create a project that would serve as an homage to that city. Already available for pre-order, on May 18, 2018 he will release that album to the world, and he hopes it serves as the anthem that will put his beloved city on the map for all lovers of hip-hop.
“Hip-hop has Compton and all kind of other places, and I just felt like it was time to put together an album based on where I’m from and my city,” Darick said. “It’s a conceptual album with a cinematic vibe – kind of like Curtis Mayfield’s ‘Superfly’ album, or ‘Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City’ from Kendrick Lamar. It’s very lyrical and it’s very detailed and it strings all together. It’s a whole thread from my point of view – from someone who was brought up in a city on a block where there was a liquor store and a church house.”
Each song on the album utilizes some form of “Mil” within the title, which Darick said is one of the ways he tried to tie a thread throughout the project. Those songs tell different stories from Darick’s life growing up on the streets of Milwaukee and the various experiences he had over the years. This album comes with a free short-documentary entitled “MILraculous,” that explains the making of this album.
Though Darick has always been a music lover, it wasn’t until 2014 that he started chasing his career full-time. In that year he launched “The World Is Yourz,” and album that gained him notoriety and led to a national tour. In 2015, Darick followed that up with an EP called “The One Love Project,” as well as an audio-book album version of his Amazon Best Selling book, “The Diary of a Stay-At-Home Dad: My Journal Behind Bars.” The first single from his “One Love Project” was nominated for a Global Peace Award in June 2016. Also in 2016 Darick released an album called “Breathe,” for which he was nominated for two IMEA awards as a solo artist, as well as for Hip-Hop Artist of the Year and Hip-Hop Song of the Year. In 2017, Darick released a handful of singles, including “Paranoid,” which won a Global Music Award, as well as “Growing Pains” and “Where is the Love.”
Since that time Darick has launched his own label, Elevator Muzik Group, and has continued to release new music. He said he hopes to ride the waves of success that he’s experienced over the past few years into this new album about Milwaukee, and he can’t wait to see how the album will inspire people all over the country.
